Basics of Pharmaceutics

Pharmaceutics is a science deals with Pharmaceutical Dosage forms which means API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) alone or with Excipient(s) turns into medication (Dosage form) to be used by patient.
Dosage forms are which delivers the molecules to site of action within body.

Dosage forms classified according to as follows:
       1.    Based on Route of Administration
a.     Oral
b.    Parenteral
c.     Topical
d.    Rectal
e.     Vaginal
f.       Inhaled
g.     Ophthalmic

       2.    Based on Physical form
a.     Solid
b.    Semi solid
c.     Liquid
d.    Gaseous
Ø Solid dosage forms include Tablets, Capsules, Powders, granules etc.,
Ø Semi solid dosage forms includes ointments, creams, gels etc.,
Ø Liquid dosage forms includes Syrups, suspensions, emulsions etc.,
Ø Gaseous dosage forms includes sprays, aerosols, nebulizer etc.,

This is only basic introduction of Pharmaceutics. I would provide more data on dosage forms in further post.

UNIFORMITY OF DOSAGE UNITS

uniformity of dosage unit (UOD)  can be known as the uniformity in the amount of the drug substance among dosage units

It (UOD) can be determined by two methods

1. By content uniformity (CU) -  based on the assay / amount of the individual content of drug substance(s)

2. Weight variation (WV) - Name itself showing weight as you might understand. (It prefers when a dosage unit contains more than 25% of Active substance(s).

Generally, When a tablet / capsule contains more than 25% of active substance, unnecessary to carry Content uniformity when tablet as in core where as coated tablets other than film coated require to send for CU (content uniformity). Though, In pharmaceutical industry , wish to send for CU even for core.

Content uniformity:

Required for dosage forms as follows
1. Core tablet(s) less than 25% of active substance and Coated tablets other than film coated tablets that comprises  25% or more of one tablet.
2. Trans dermal system
3. Suspension / Emulsion / gels in unit-dose container
4.Inhalations
5.Suppositories
6. Soft gelatin capsules

WEIGHT DEFINITION

Weight can be defined as various ways based on situation...

General thing in simple manner is that, A matter or object ( body / solid matter / liquid matter  etc.,)  applied or utilised gravitational force.

Lets have a look at Example:

A balance is about capacity of 150 kg. Just imagine....

You applied gravitational force on balance which displays what force you exerted on object due to accelerated gravity.
